COVID-19 vaccines are saving lives in Columbia County and around the U.S.. 71.7% of Columbia County’s population 12-years-old and older had been fully vaccinated as of September 17, 2021. This percentage is not yet high enough to ensure protection through “herd immunity.”

Nonetheless, despite increased cases caused by the more contagious Delta variant, vaccines are providing protection. As of September 17, the Columbia County Department of Health reported there were 98 active cases of COVID, with 11 people hospitalized and two in the ICU. For those in nursing homes in Columbia County who have been vaccinated but recently contracted the virus, the Department of Health continues to report very few serious cases. Only one out of ten people hospitalized as of September 10 had been vaccinated, the Department of Health reported.

Similarly, a September CDC report showed that, since the Delta variant became the most common variant, fully vaccinated people were five times less likely to be infected, ten times less likely to be hospitalized, and ten times less likely to die.
